Love them or hate them, a pair of high heels is an essential in every girl’s wardrobe. They can make you look taller, make your legs look leaner, and instantly elevate any outfit. But wearing a pair of heels isn’t always a walk in the park. Hence, we have put together a few of our favourite tips and tricks to help you walk, and even dance in heels without all that pain!
1. LOOK FOR PLATFORMS
Sure, skinny tall heels look sexy, but they are also extremely painful to wear all day. Instead, look for something with a little bit of a platform or a rubber sole in the front to provide better support. Your high heels won’t feel so high with this little detail.
2. SHOP AT THE END OF THE DAY
When you go shoe shopping, try and do it at the end of the day. Usually, your feet are more swollen by the evening thanks to you being out and about all day. If you try on a pair at this time, and it feels unbearably uncomfortable, then it is not right! Make sure the shoe has a snug fit instead.
3. LEAD WITH YOUR ENTIRE LEG
When walking in a pair of heels, lead with your thighs. We often make the mistake of leading with our feet, or even worse dragging our feet while walking. This puts all the pressure on the balls of our feet, making wearing heels an even more painful process.
4. GO FOR WEDGES
If the skinny or narrow heel just isn’t your thing, go for wedges. These have a wider base, hence, giving better stability. Plus, they come in some rather cute styles!
5. PAY ATTENTION TO THE HEEL
This is a tiny detail that makes a world of a difference. Look for shoes that have the heel placed right at the centre of your heel, and not on the extreme end. This helps distribute your weight over the entire foot, not just the ball of the foot.
6. GO A SIZE UP!
Even Meghan Markle swears by this trick. If your feet are feeling stuffy, they will swell up, in turn causing blisters, and in the long run, bunions. If go a size up, your feet will have some room. That way, even if they swell up, you will still be comfortable.
7. TAPE YOUR TOES
As bizarre as this trick may sound, many claim that it works like magic. All you have to do is tape your 3rd and 4th toes together to take the pressure off the ball of your foot. There is a nerve that splits between these two toes, and by limiting the pressure placed on it, you can reduce the sensation of pain.
8. WEAR A SHOE CUSHION AND INSOLE
Gel or silicon-based cushions and insoles are readily available online and at shoe stores, and they work really well in relieving pain caused by wearing heels. They combat soreness under the ball of the foot and the sole, particularly if you are looking to stand in your heels for long hours.
9. HEEL-TOE-HEEL-TOE RULE
Just like you would walk in flat shoes, similarly, walk in a heel-toe motion with your feet to maintain balance on a thinner heel. Also, remember to take small steps while doing so.
10. OPT FOR BLOCK HEELS
Good thing block heels are all the rage this season, as the thicker heel does give you better stability. No more wobbling around as you walk.
